The Arecanut tree (also known as betel) is an important
part of many Sri Lankan ceremonies such as weddings
Often mahouts can be seen chewing a red mix of the nut
and lime wrapped in a betel leaf that dyes the mouth.
It is like chewing gum and the warm tingling
sensation increases alertness.
The Bond
Mahouts learn the individual character of their
elephant and its relationship with others.
The mahout can read subtle signs the elephant gives
and must work very hard to remain alert and
vigilant to be at all times.
